Interview conducted and written by Ellen Austin, former Campus Talent Attraction Recruiter – Global Banking and Markets

Ellen: What does an average day look like as an Analyst in Retail Customer and Channel Analytics?

Joseph: Thanks to the Masters of Management Analytics program at Rotman at the University of Toronto and the sponsorship of Scotiabank, I’ve had the opportunity to be a full-time student and part-time employee.

From my experience, my job is not the traditional Monday to Friday, nine-to-five job. Through my program, two other fellow Masters students and I have received the opportunity to leverage our classroom experiences and apply them to the real world. I attend school Monday to Thursday, and I am in the office on Fridays, where I apply my analytical skills and harness data for decision-making. I’ve been able to analyze metrics, leverage relationships and dive in the customer experience to drive change in Retail Banking alongside other Scotiabankers.

Ellen: What is your favourite thing about your job?

Joseph: My favourite thing about my job is the opportunity I’ve been given at Scotiabank! The ability to do my Masters and learn – but also the ability to apply my knowledge in a professional setting – has been rewarding. Being able to apply my skills and work towards a common goal, all while being supported by my team and managers has been great! Each Friday at Scotiabank provides me with new challenges and I look forward to my every day at the Bank.

Ellen: How do you feel this position is preparing you for the future?

Joseph: After completing an undergrad in Engineering, I saw that data can drive meaningful change if leveraged and used appropriately and correctly. Through the application of my class-based knowledge, I have been able to gain real-world experience. I feel prepared for what’s next in my future and I truly value my ability to drive change at Scotiabank. My position in Canadian Banking has given me tools, data-sets and the ability to produce outputs for our clients and employees.
