What is eReceipts?

eReceipts allows you to store and access your digitized receipts on your device via the Scotiabank Mobile Banking app.

You can digitize your receipts in two ways:

  • When you subscribe to the eReceipts program you will create a unique @scotiareceipts.com email address. When shopping at participating merchants, enter this email address or give it to the merchant upon checkout, and your digital receipt will be emailed, archived, and automatically matched to the corresponding entry in your transaction history.
  • Use the eReceipts camera capture feature to take a picture of the receipt. The receipt will be digitized and made available in the Scotiabank Mobile Banking app.

What is my eReceipts email address?

Your eReceipts email address is a unique address created by you when you subscribe to the service. If you’ve already created your eReceipts email address, you’ll find it displayed at the top of your receipts list screen.

When shopping at participating merchants enter this email address or give it to the merchant upon checkout, and your digital receipt will be emailed, archived, and automatically matched to the corresponding entry in your transaction history.

Please note that your eReceipts email address is not intended for personal, non-receipt emails. Its sole purpose is for gathering and syncing your receipts to your transactions.

Who has access to my data/information?

When you subscribed to the eReceipts service you provided your consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of your anonymized personal information. We use a third party service provider in relation to this service, and that third party service provider will also have access to data in order to perform services on our behalf.

Capturing Receipts

How do I capture my paper receipts?

From the receipts list, tap on “Capture Receipts”.

For iOS 9 and above, you will default to “Automatic” capture mode, with the flash automatically turned on. Arrange the receipt edges on the screen so that the whole receipt is visible. Hover over the receipt, holding still, to give the camera time to snap the perfect receipt image for you. Avoid white surfaces to allow the camera to detect the edges of the receipt.

The other camera capture mode is “Manual”. The flash will be automatically turned on. Use the crop bar and grid lines to eliminate the background of the receipt image and ensure the receipt is straight. Tap on the receipt to focus on the receipt’s text. Tap on the circular capture button at the bottom of the screen to capture your receipt image.

How do I capture my electronic receipts?

You must first set up a personal eReceipts email address (ex. john@scotiareceipts.com). You can do so from the top of your receipts list, or, if you haven’t added any receipts yet, tap the button “Add Email Receipts”.

Simply forward the receipts from your personal email inbox to your eReceipts email address. Some retailers offer to email you a copy of your receipt. You can give your eReceipts email address to the cashier, and the receipt will directly be uploaded to your account.

If you ever forget your @scotiareceipts.com email address, you can find it at the top of the receipts list.

Can I upload receipts from transactions paid in cash or a non-participating bank card?

Yes. eReceipts supports receipts irrespective of what you used to pay.

However, in order to match receipts to your transaction history, eReceipts will only be able to match receipts for transactions in which you used your Scotiabank card. Your other receipt captures will still be visible in the eReceipts section of Scotiabank’s mobile banking app.

Organizing Receipts

How do notes on receipts work?

For each receipt, you can add free-form notes about the purchase. You can use this to keep track of who was at the group meal that you expensed, or the name of the person for whom you bought a gift. You can even enter hashtags, just like with Twitter and Instagram. Any hashtags that you used previously will start to pre-fill as soon as you type ‘#’ in the Notes field so that you can use the same labels consistently.

What are folders? How can I use them?

Folders enable you to group related receipts together so that you can easily review them as a group. For example, you may want to use folders to group all the receipts for your “Business Trip to New York” that you can easily export when you need to process your expenses for that trip.

How can I search for my receipts?

From the receipt list, tap on the magnifying glass icon in your top-right corner. You can search by merchant, by the item name, by totals on the receipt, or even by the notes you entered about the receipt.

You can filter through your search results to find the receipts you need. Just tap on the filter icon to the right of the search bar. This reveals a list of filters that you can set to only consider receipts that meet a certain criterion.

If you want to find receipts within a specific folder, go into the receipt list for that folder first, and then tap on the magnifying glass within that folder.

Exporting and sharing Receipts

Can I export my captured receipts?

Yes. You are given the option to export your receipt images as .PDFs, and key receipt information in .CSV or .XLS expense report formats. There are a few ways to export your receipt captures:

  • Export individual receipts from your list of all receipts, where you can “Select” the receipts you want to export.
  • Export entire folders of receipts by going into the folder that you wish to export. One of the options in the tab bar along the bottom will be to “Export”.
  • Export all your receipts by tapping on “Select” from the receipts list, and then tapping on “Select All”, and then the “Export” button in the tab bar along the bottom.

How can I share my receipts with my bookkeeper or accountant?

When you tap on an exported file from within the “Recent Exports” list (on the right side of the file in the list, below the date, there is a sharing icon), you will have the ability to share it using the standard iOS and Android sharing options.

Are digital copies of my receipts accepted by the CRA?

Yes. The CRA will accept images of documents, such as receipts, as long as (1) they are an accurate reproduction with the intention of replacing the original paper document, (2) it gives the same information as the paper document, and (3) the important details of the document are not obscured (e.g., due to resolution, tone or hue).

For any receipts used to support statements made on your tax return, you can destroy the paper receipt provided that the image you have taken of the receipt complies with the Canadian General Standards for electronic records and includes all necessary information. Be sure to check the guidelines of the country in which you are filing taxes for.

Can I access or export my receipts after I’ve unsubscribed from the service?

Unfortunately, no. Before unsubscribing, it is critical that you first export, download, and save your receipts. Once you unsubscribe from the service, any receipts you had stored are no longer available.

Troubleshooting

Why isn’t my receipt linked to a transaction on my bank statement?

In order to link a receipt to a transaction on your bank statement, the transaction amount, merchant name and date need to match. Occasionally, this will not be possible if you have made a purchase with more than one card or with a combination of cash and credit/debit. More rarely, there may be cases where the purchase date is not close enough to the date the transaction was posted by the merchant to your credit card account, leading to no match being found.

What should I do if a receipt I forwarded to my eReceipts address hasn’t shown up in my receipts list?

Please confirm that you correctly entered your eReceipts email address when you forwarded the receipt. You’ll find your eReceipts address displayed at the top of your receipts list screen. Look out especially for common typos in the word “receipt”.

Can I forward receipts from my other email accounts to my Scotiabank eReceipts email?

Yes. If you have a receipt in a personal or other email account, simply forward it to your eReceipts address and your digital receipt will be emailed, archived, and automatically matched to the corresponding entry in your transaction history.

Why are some of my receipts digitally transformed and others are not?

eReceipts is training its system to understand more than just the key receipt information of merchant name, date, and total. eReceipts tries to understand the store information, the item, subtotals, taxes and tenders, and even reward & loyalty point balances. Whenever eReceipts is confident that it can understand this level of information, eReceipts will transform the receipts for more clarity on your transaction in an enhanced receipt format. You can always swipe back to view the original image of the receipt.

How do I retrieve a deleted receipt?

Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that we can retrieve your deleted receipt. However, please call 1-800-275-5316 and a customer service representative will assist you.
