Careers

At Scotiabank, we recognize that an accessible workplace makes us all stronger.

Our vision is to create an inclusive culture where every employee is empowered to perform at their very best, be respected for who they are, and their differences and similarities are embraced. We understand that accessibility is a journey, and we are committed to building a more inclusive society for everybody, every ability, and every future.

We had a chance to connect with one of our Scotiabankers, Kulvinder, to learn more about how Scotiabank has provided him with the resources and accommodations to reach his fullest potential living with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Rochelle: Hello Kulvinder, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with me! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your current role?

Kulvinder: I started my career with Scotiabank back in 2010 and in 2019 I was first diagnosed with ALS. There is no cure for ALS but there is a lot of research going on to slow the progression while the search for a cure continues. I have been fortunate that so far, the progression has been slow for me. I am in my 5th year of living with ALS and have not experienced complete paralysis of any body part. I currently work as an Assistant Manager in the Exchange Trade Derivatives Group and in my role, I ensure our positions and equity match the market exchanges to minimize risk.

Rochelle: In your experience, how has Scotiabank created a more accessible and inclusive work environment?

Kulvinder: Over the years, I have seen many different types of accommodations made for Scotiabank staff; for example, standing adjustable desk to support employees who may suffer from different types of back ailments. In my own personal experience, as my ALS progressed, I have felt fully supported moving from Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition software to my current Eye Gaze technology that allows me to control the keyboard and mouse with my eyes. With the use of the Eye Gaze technology, I have continued to establish good rapport with my colleagues and key stakeholders while meeting critical deadlines for our business unit.

I have been working at Scotiabank for the past 12 years and I still find unique situations that challenge me and continue to make my work interesting, I love it! I am fortunate that Eye Gaze technology is ubiquitous now as without it, I would not be able to continue working.

Rochelle: What advice or information would you have for future Scotiabank employees?

Kulvinder: The only limitation to your growth is your own self-limitations. Scotiabank has offered me unlimited resources and support to reach my fullest potential.
