Some people follow a neatly mapped-out path to the career of their dreams, while others bounce around between different professions until they finally end up where they’re meant to be. Case in point: Manel Mauvais, CEO and founder of Radar Sécurité, a company that specializes in site surveillance and personal protection services.

Mauvais first found success in his native country of Haiti as an art curator. His work led him to travel all over the Caribbean, even exhibiting at the famous Louvre Museum. After Haiti was hit by a terrible earthquake in 2010, Mauvais moved to Quebec. He planned on staying only three months, but soon fell in love with the place and decided to stay.

This initial change in life was soon followed by a change in career. A departure from his art curator roots, Mauvais then tried his hand at music production, only to realize the security industry might be a better fit. The third time was a charm, and that was the beginning of a beautiful entrepreneur experience!

Getting down to brass tacks

Mauvais wanted to understand Quebec society fully before launching his own business. As someone with a bright and curious mind, he enrolled in what he called “the school of life,” observing and immersing himself in the local culture. He then did a number of smaller contracts to familiarize himself with his new profession. As he puts it, “if you want to jump higher, you need to learn how to step back first.”

In 2014, together with three security guards and his niece as HR manager, the former art curator officially launched Radar Sécurité. Today, the business has several hundred guards, operating in a variety of business sectors across the province.

“Radar Sécurité is always growing, and I’m proud to see how it has developed over the years. I’m even prouder to have earned the trust of our clients. We now offer a diverse array of services, from site surveillance to investigations. Our rock solid team is always ready to tackle exciting new challenges.” – Manel Mauvais, CEO and founder

Team spirit

Eight years after founding Radar Sécurité, Mauvais is proud to call his organization a true family. He considers the company, which is full of employees who care about its success, to be his greatest accomplishment. His Scotiabank representative is also a part of the family and has played a major role in helping Mauvais build Radar Sécurité’s financial structure.

“Radar Sécurité is a business that never compromises on the quality of their services, and it’s been an inspiration to support them and help them give it their all. The combination of the founder’s perseverance and the devotion of their employees has contributed to the organization’s strong growth. It’s a great example of what grit can do.” – Michael Santillo, Senior Relationship Manager, Banque Scotia

In the midst of this pressing labour shortage, the family feel of the company has really come to the forefront, as Mauvais sees it. Radar Sécurité has been able to seize the opportunity thanks to the dedication of its employees – and the company has returned the favour with a competitive employee retention program. For Manel Mauvais, “employee loyalty is the key to expansion.”

Radar Sécurité has worked with Scotiabank since 2014, receiving legal advice and support from an advisor who knows their business, and can help the company navigate growth challenges, carve a place for itself in the security industry and implement services province wide. Over 12 years after arriving in Quebec, we can say that Mauvais’ unusual journey should be an inspiration for all of us to leave our comfort zone and continue to dream.
