Households have been spending more of their time at home, slashing their spending on a large range of products, yet some clear winners have emerged. Items useful for home entertainment and a home office got a pandemic boost, a Scotiabank Economics’ analysis of customer retail transaction data shows, with jumps in purchases in March, April, May and up to June 21 of this year compared to 2019. But growth in these categories is now starting to moderate, possibly as restrictions that provided impetus for these types of spending are coming off gradually in provinces across the country.
