Some merchants that were hardest hit by the pandemic-related shutdowns in late March and April have seen an uptick in card spending in recent weeks as Canadian consumers ventured outside of their homes, the latest Scotiabank Economics' analysis of customer retail transaction data shows. Hardware stores saw a surge in purchase activity in May and June, as gardening season began.  Car-related spending and clothing shopping saw card spending reach levels on par with 2019 as restrictions on stores and outdoor recreation eased.
