Brian J. Porter
President and Chief Executive Officer, Scotiabank
Brian has spent his entire professional career at Scotiabank, having joined in 1981. Over the past four decades, he has progressed through increasingly senior positions, including executive roles in areas such as Global Banking and Markets, Risk, Treasury, and International Banking. In 2012, Brian was appointed President of Scotiabank and, one year later, assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer.
Brian contributes his time and expertise to many industry, educational, community, health and arts organizations. He serves as the Chair of the Board of Huron College and a board member of the Business Council of Canada, the Council of the Americas, and the Washington-based Institute of International Finance, where he is presently completing his term as Vice-Chairman and Treasurer. Brian is also a member of the Board of the BlackNorth Initiative, a group dedicated to the removal of anti-Black systemic barriers in Canada.
In 2017, Brian was elected Chair of the Board of Trustees of University Health Network (UHN). UHN is Canada’s top research hospital and was recently, for the third year in a row, ranked one of the world’s best hospitals. Brian also served as the Chair of the United Way of Greater Toronto 2018 fundraising campaign – leading a large and diverse volunteer group to a record $110,000,000 achievement.
Brian earned a B.Comm. from Dalhousie University, and has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) from Dalhousie University (2008) and Ryerson University (2018). He is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard Business School.
