To Determine Your Browser Level

Internet Explorer Users (PC)

  • At the top of the browser window in the toolbar section, click on Help
  • From the Help drop-down menu, select About Internet Explorer
  • See the Version Number in the window that appears

Internet Explorer Users (Mac)

  • Select the Apple menu at the top of the screen
  • From the Apple drop-down menu, select About Internet Explorer
  • See the Version Number in the window that appears

Netscape Users

  • At the top of the browser window in the toolbar section, click on Help
  • From the Help drop-down menu, select either About Netscape or About Navigator or About Communicator (whichever appears)
  • See the Version Number in the window that appears


To Determine Your Encryption Level

Internet Explorer Users (PC)

  • From the top menu, click on Help
  • From the drop-down menu, select About Internet Explorer
  • The information displayed for Cipher Strength is the encryption level (i.e., Cipher Strength: 128-bit)
  • If it does not say 128-bit, then you do not have a browser with 128-bit encryption

Internet Explorer Users (Mac)

  • Select the Apple menu at the top of the screen
  • The information displayed for Cipher Strength is the encryption level
  • If it does not say 128-bit, then you do not have a browser with 128-bit encryption

Netscape Users

  • From the toolbar menu, click on the Security button
  • Within the window displayed, from the list of items on the left side, click on Navigator
  • On the right, below Advanced Security (SSL) Configuration, ensure both the Secure Sockets Layer boxes are checked
  • Click on the Configure SSL v3 button
  • On the Configure Ciphers screen, ensure the RC4 encryption with 128-bit key and an MD5 MAC box is checked. If this box is not displayed on the screen, or it says RC4 encryption with a 128-bit key and an MD5 (when permitted), then you do not have a browser with 128-bit encryption
