Making The Effort To Reach Out
For the staff of Scotiabank St. Vincent, giving back to the community involved traveling over harrowing roads for two hours to reach a village called Fancy more than 38 miles from the capital at the far north end of the island. As a group, the Scotiabank team decided to visit the remote Fancy Government School.
Too often the poorer rural schools are overlooked in favor of the more developed mainstream schoolswe wanted to reach out to those most in need Steve Vickery, Manager.
Although the visit was made on a Saturday, teachers ensured that more than 90% of the students were present. The occasion was so historic for this community that they posted the visit on their village notice board. The community came out in their numbers to greet and welcome the staff in what was described by many staff members to be one most gratifying experiences.
The staff engaged the students in a fun-filled day of songs, games, and treats.
Every child present and even those who could not be there received a backpack filled with school supplies and a favourite snack.
The memories of our day with the smiling children of Fancy Government School will stay with us all until the next time we visit.
