The Scotiabank Women Against Breast Cancer 5K Classic 2008 was held for the first time in May this year both in Trinidad and in Tobago. The month of May falls in the dry season in Trinidad and Tobago raising expectations for good weather. The afternoon of Saturday 17th May 2008 lived up to the promise of excellent weather conditions for the approximately 3,700 all female participants in the annual Scotiabank Women Against Breast Cancer 5k Classic.
This event, now in its tenth year, has been established as a national and regional calendar event. This years affair, as in the previous years attracted women from under 15 to over 70 to participate in the 5K. From grandmothers to mothers, to daughters young enough to be in strollers, they all united to raise awareness and to collectively stand together in the fight against breast cancer.
Some of the more competitive women finished the race in record time and were awarded gift hampers and other prizes. Others chose to walk at their own pace, but everyone who took part in the 5K was given an embossed medal and received a gift bag for participating.
Funds raised from this annual event will be used to fund the cost of breast cancer screening to women of all ages throughout the nation in the month of October, designed Breast Cancer Awareness month worldwide.
