Scotiabank St. Lucia is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities to nationals of St. Lucia through the University of the West Indies. The scholarship is given for a maximum of three years and is offered every two years. To qualify, the individual must have attained academic excellence and must be recommended by the university. After the university sends in the recommendations based on academics, the individual will then be interviewed by Country Management to determine dire financial need component.
Scotiabank St. Lucia has been giving these scholarships since 1991, and many students have graduated with either 1st or 2nd class honours; some of them were even granted scholarships by the university to pursue their Masters because of their good results.
Our scholarship holder for 2004-2007 is a physically challenged individual and was the first totally blind student to attend the university. She faced many challenges, but overcame them through her perseverance and determination to succeed. The University took up her cause and strove to make her stay a comfortable one, by providing her with the equipment and tools necessary for her disability. She pursued a degree at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies.
How scholarships are processed:
In April/May each year, advertisements are placed in local newspapers and at the university campuses on their bulletin boards, inviting students to apply for scholarships. The forms can be obtained from any Scotiabank branch or from the university. The forms contain the scholarship application and a record of a statement of finances.
After completing the forms, they should be submitted to the university for processing. The university submits to the bank a list of possible candidates. After receiving the list from the university, the candidates are called into branches for interviews with Country Management to determine the individuals’ financial status. The chosen candidate will then be called in to inform them of their success. They are required to bring in a picture, which is placed into an advertisement announcing the candidate for the year.
