Important Information About E-mail Fraud

People have recently received messages from e-mail addresses posing as their financial institution. These e-mails invite customers to click on a link and enter their personal banking information, such as their Internet banking Login ID, password and Personal Identification Number (PIN).

These fraudulent e-mails are sent as spam to numerous e-mail addresses and inform recipients of a "security system" update. Recipients are asked to click on a link and log into their account in order to "reactivate" it with the new "security system." If you receive similar fraudulent e-mail, delete it immediately.

Scotiabank does not and will not send e-mails to customers requesting personal or confidential information.

To our knowledge, Scotiabank customers in the Caribbean have not been targeted by similar campaigns. However, we urge you to be cautious when responding to e-mail solicitations and to review our Internet Banking Security and Safe Computing Practices information.

Please rest assured that the Scotiabank Internet Banking web site is secure. If you have any doubts about any Scotiabank communication that you receive, please check our web site or contact us at the number listed on this web site.

Tips to help protect you while conducting online transactions

  • Install anti-virus software on your computer to help prevent a computer virus attack

  • Install a personal firewall and disable file-sharing software to prevent unauthorized access to your computer and its data

  • Use passwords that are difficult for others to guess

  • Only do business with companies you know and trust

  • Look for the "lock" icon on the bottom bar of your browser prior to entering any personal information. This indicates that you are running in secure mode

  • Keep your browsers up to date with current versions and security enhancements

  • Be vigilant for fraudulent e-mail scams. These are designed to trick you into downloading a virus or jumping to a fraudulent web site and disclosing personal information

  • Be cautious of e-mails that ask for personal information. If you are unsure of the authenticity of an e-mail, do not reply; simply delete it

  • Fake or "spoof" web sites are designed to trick consumers and collect their personal information. Make sure that web sites you use post privacy and security policies, and take the time to review and understand these statements

  • Be cautious when clicking on a link or an unknown web site or unfamiliar e-mail. The link may appear to be taking you to a reputable web site, but it may be taking you to a fraudulent web site
