Scotiabank St. Lucia is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities to nationals of St. Lucia, through the University of the West Indies. The scholarship is given for a maximum of three years and is offered every two years. To qualify the individual must have attained academic excellence, and must be recommended by the University. After the university sends in the recommendations based on academics, the individual will then be interviewed by Country Management to determine dire financial need component.

Scotiabank St. Lucia has been giving these scholarships from 1991 and to date 11 students have graduated, with either 1st or 2nd class honors, some of them were even granted scholarships by the University to pursue their Masters, because of their good results.

Our twelfth-scholarship holder for 2004-2007, is a physically challenged individual, she is totally blind. She is presently pursuing a degree at the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies; her final year is beginning in October 2006. She is the first totally blind student to attend the university; she has had many challenges, but has slowly been overcoming them, through her perseverance and determination to succeed. The University has taken up her cause seriously and is striving to make her stay a comfortable one, by providing her with the equipment and tools necessary for her disability.

PROCESS for applying for a Scholarship:

In April/May of each year advertisements are placed in the local newspapers and at the University campuses on their bulletin boards, inviting persons to apply for scholarships. The forms can be obtained from any branch of Scotiabank or from the university. The forms contain the scholarship application and the other is a record of a statement of finances. After completing the forms, they should be submitted to the university for processing. The university submits to the bank a list of possible candidates. After receiving the list from the university, the candidates are called into the branch for an interview, with Country Management to determine the individuals’ financial status. The chosen candidate will then be called in to inform them of their success. They are required to bring in a picture, which is placed into an advertisement announcing the candidate for the year.
