Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN)

Protect Your Personal Identification Number (PIN)

By understanding how to properly select a PIN for your ScotiaCard and the importance of keeping it confidential, you can help keep your money safe. Your PIN is a secret code that allows you, and you alone, to access your accounts through Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

Why do I have to protect my PIN?

Your ScotiaCard, PIN is the key to your account(s). Even if criminals get access to your card, they need the PIN to access your money – so remember to protect your PIN.

How do I protect my PIN?

  • Select a unique PIN for each of your banking cards (ScotiaCard and credit cards)
  • Select 4 unique digits (numbers, letters or a combination) that you can remember; DO NOT select your birth date, telephone number, licence plate, address or other easy-to-guess combinations
  • Memorize your PIN; DO NOT write it down or tell anyone what it is
  • Be sure to keep your ScotiaCard in sight at all times during a transaction and NEVER lend it to anyone
  • Remember to shield the keypad when entering your PIN at an ATM
  • Check your statements regularly to verify that all transactions have been properly documented and contact the bank with any discrepancies
  • Report a lost or stolen card immediately
  • Contact us immediately if you suspect your ScotiaCard and/or PIN has been compromised

You can get a new or replacement ScotiaCard or change your PIN at any Scotiabank branch. For more details, please refer to your ScotiaCard Cardholder Agreement.
