Protect your PIN & Password

Protect Your Personal Identification Number (PIN) & Password: Internet, Phone, ATM and Debit Point of Sale (POS)

By understanding how to properly select a PIN and passwords for your ScotiaCard and the importance of keeping them confidential, you can help keep your money safe. Your PIN and passwords are secret codes that allow you, and you alone, to access your accounts through Internet and telephone banking, at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and at Debit (POS) payment terminals.

Why do I have to protect my PIN & passwords?

Your ScotiaCard, PIN and passwords are the keys to your account(s). Even if criminals get access to your card, they need the PIN or passwords to access your money – so remember to protect your PIN and passwords.

How do I protect my PIN & passwords?

  • Select a unique PIN and password for each of your banking cards (ScotiaCard and credit cards)
  • Select 4 unique digits (numbers, letters or a combination) that you can remember; DO NOT select your birth date, telephone number, licence plate, address or other easy-to-guess combinations
  • Memorize your PIN and passwords; DO NOT write them down or tell anyone what they are
  • Be sure to keep your ScotiaCard in sight at all times during a transaction and NEVER lend it to anyone
  • Remember to shield the keypad when entering your PIN at an ATM or when making a Debit Point of Sale purchase
  • Check your statements regularly to verify that all transactions have been properly documented and contact the bank with any discrepancies
  • Report a lost or stolen card immediately
  • Contact us immediately if you suspect your ScotiaCard and/or PIN has been compromised

You can get a new or replacement ScotiaCard or change your PIN at any Scotiabank branch. For more details, please refer to your ScotiaCard Cardholder Agreement.
