Bustamante Hospital for Children

Bustamante Hospital for Children is the only hospital in Jamaica that specializes in the care of children with a focus on the care of the critically ill. Scotiabank has been a friend to the hospital for quite some time and it is common to see Scotiabankers visiting with the children on Saturdays, loving, reading, giving baths, grooming and playing with them. This interaction has revealed to us the many and varied needs of the hospital. As such the Bank decided to make a substantial contribution aimed at enhancing the services of the hospital.

The hospital has been faced with increased service demands with the recent advent of free healthcare. After reviewing the needs hospital executives requested that the bank partner with them in creating an area on the grounds of the hospital where parents, caring for their sick children as well as hospital staff could escape in a relaxing and soothing environment.

On May 23, 2008 Scotiabanks National Labour Day Project saw the creation of two gardens for the hospital. The project has two phases; the first phase saw the creation of 2 gardens with 2 murals. The second phase will see the completion of walkways, patios, gazebo, fountain areas and the handing over of the garden to the Hospital. In the spirit of partnership, Scotiabank joined forces with the St. Hughs Art and Environmental clubs to complete phase 1. Phase 2 is being completed by contractors and Scotiabank garden club. The garden will be handed over to the hospital in the fall.
