The Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation was established on February 13, 1996 with an endowment fund of $100 million. This fund now stands at $284 million.
Since its inception, the Foundation has donated over $362 million to Education, Health and Community projects Jamaica. In 2005, the donations totaled $61.8 million.
The Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation is guided by the principles to assist in alleviating poverty, deprivation, distress among economically and socially disadvantaged individuals and their dependents: and to undertake research into these problems, along with methods of addressing them.
Major contributions to the Health sector:
- Cornwall Regional Hospital, Montego Bay, and St. James, (1998): the Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation Haemodialysis Centre was established at the hospital at a cost of $19.3 million and continues to support the centre with an annual donation of $7 million to provide drugs, supplies and maintenance of equipment. This facility provides treatment for patients with renal (kidney) failure. In 2005, an additional donation of $5.2 million was disbursed for the purchase of a new dialysis machine and equipment.
- Kingston Public Hospital, Kingston, (2000): the Foundation completed renovations to the Renal Unit at a cost of $19.4 million. Unit was outfitted with a water purification system, air-conditioning units and haemodialysis machines. The Foundation also contributes to the maintenance of the equipment in the Unit.
- Jamaica Cancer Society, Kingston, (2000): The Foundation donation a fully equipped Mobile Mammography Unit at a cost of $10.4 million. This Unit is the first in the island and is used to provide breast cancer screening for women in rural communities. This unit is also maintained by the Foundation.
- Port Antonio Hospital, Portland, (2001): construction of the Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation Emergency Unit at the Port Antonio Hospital at a cost of $8 million, enabling the staff to deal with an increased number of emergencies at any one time.
- University Hospital of the West Indies, St. Andrew, (2005): expansion of the Scotiabank Centennial Accident & Emergency Unit at a cost of $32 million. The Foundation provides $1 million annually to maintain the Unit. The Foundation has just completed the expansion of this unit at a cost of $32 million and the facility will be handed over in May 2006.
Major Contributions in Education
- Northern Caribbean University, (2004) - $9.6 million was donated to the University's Endowment Fund and Computer Community Outreach Programme to make tertiary education accessible to the needy and extend computer literacy to the community.
- Point Hill Diagnostic Reading Centre, St. Catherine, (2003 - 2004) - $7.5 million for the provision of a Special Education Teacher.
- Hugh Shearer Foundation, (2003) - establishment of the Hugh Shearer Foundation with a donation of $6.5 million.
- Iris Gelley Primary School, (2005-2006)- $5.5 million for the construction and equipping of computer lab. This facility will be opened later this year.
- Holy Family Infant and Primary School – breakfast feeding programme.
Major Contributions in Community projects:
- Urban Development Corporation, (2001- 2004): donated $15 million for the Prime Minister's Inner-city Redevelopment Programme.
- Hands Across Jamaica For Righteousness, (2004 – 2006) - $5 Million for the funding of a Secretariat.
- Golden Age - annual donation of $1.5 million for the provision of meals for residents in 'Cluster F'.
- May Pen Cemetery, (2004): contributed $1.5 million for the restoration of the Cemetery.
