Cross Border Debit

ScotiaCardWhen travelling in the United States, get immediate, secure, and real-time access to your money by using your ScotiaCard™ to pay for purchases at point-of-sale terminals, just like you do in Canada.

Wherever you see the NYCE logo you can make purchases directly from your bank account, using your ScotiaCard and Personal Identification Number (PIN). Visit the NYCE web site for a list of retailers that offer the Cross Border Debit service.

Benefits of Cross Border Debit

Enjoy the convenience, safety, and security of using your ScotiaCard at stores in the United States:

  • Convenient - cash-back on your purchase and direct debit means fewer trips to the bank or bank machine and no need for traveller’s cheques.

  • Safe - there’s no need to carry excess cash that could be lost or stolen.

  • Secure - it’s PIN-based just like in Canada.

How to Complete a Transaction

Your experience will be slightly different from your typical Canadian transaction, and the language displayed on the terminal is available only in English. When prompted:

  • Swipe your ScotiaCard.

  • Confirm the amount to be debited. The amount you
will be asked to "Ok" will be presented in US dollars².

  • Enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN), the same as you would in Canada.

  • You may not be asked to select an account¹.

We're here to answer your questions, anytime.

Please call 1-800-4-SCOTIA (1-800-472-6842)
or in the Toronto area, 416-701-7200.

¹ The default account for the Cross Border Debit service is the Chequing account. If you do not have a “keyed” chequing account, our system will automatically search for a “keyed” savings account to process the transaction request.

² A foreign exchange fee will apply when converting from U.S dollars to Canadian dollars. Acxsys Corporation on our behalf determines the exchange rate on the date of conversion. This rate may be different from the rate in effect on the date your Direct Payment occurred. The rate includes an additional 2.5%. Furthermore, a Cardholder Service Fee of $1.50 will apply on a per transaction basis and these transactions will count towards your monthly transactions as specified in your account plan and all regular account fees will apply.
