Listening to Employees

For more than 10 years, Scotiabank Group employees have been asked to provide their opinions about their employment experience by completing the annual ViewPoint employee survey.

Employees can express their level of satisfaction with various elements such as communication, recognition and manager/employee relationships. A separate section allows employees to voice comments on issues not captured in the core survey questions. Survey results can influence changes in practices and policies on a corporate level and resolve workplace issues within individual branches, departments or teams.

In 2008, almost 55,000 employees, or 82 per cent of the Scotiabank Group workforce, took part in the ViewPoint survey. The survey was offered online, simultaneously in more than 50 countries, in three languages, and is inclusive of employees with a visual impairment. Anonymity is ensured by employing a third party vendor to administer the survey and analyze results.

As part of our continuous improvement efforts, the ViewPoint survey process was recently enhanced to include executive summaries and manager results delivered sooner in the year so that the action planning can be more timely, an online Action Planner site; and customized presentations to communicate the results clearly to employees.

Ideas in Action
Scotiabank encourages employees to share their ideas on ways to support our business success through the Ideas in Action program. It is one of the longest-running suggestion programs in Canada, and receives an average of 3,000 suggestions yearly from domestic and international employees. Suggestions cover a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from productivity to reduction in consumable resources. Participants can be rewarded with compensation ranging from $300 to $10,000, depending on the potential savings or profitability of their ideas.. In 2008, more than $150,000 in savings and cost reductions were generated by the program.

Sharing the Scotia Vibe
After receiving numerous third-party awards for being an Employer of Choice in many markets, we decided to let our employees describe how proud they are to work for Scotiabank – in their own words – as part of the Scotia Vibe employee contest.

Through this special 2008 initiative, we invited Canadian-based employees to find creative ways and new media channels to talk about the Bank, their colleagues and customer relationships in their own way. More than 400 employees and teams submitted stories, photos, video and audio clips to explain why it is great to be a Scotiabanker, and over 4,900 employees cast online votes to help award an array of weekly and grand prizes.
