Advancement of Women

Year Accomplishment
1961 First Canadian bank to appointment women as branch managers – two on the same day.
1993 Task force on the advancement of women created by Chairman and CEO Peter Godsoe to investigate why so few upper management positions at the Bank (less than 7%) are held by women. Findings lead to an increased focus on merit-based advancement and greater workplace flexibility.
2003 Revitalized Advancement of Women (AoW) initiative launched by President Rick Waugh to address barriers to women’s advancement at the Bank. Women hold 18.9% of senior management positions in Canada, lagging the other banks.
2006 The number of women in senior management positions rises to 31% at year end.
2007 Received 2007 Catalyst Award for results achieved in improving the advancement of women. AoW initiative is extended to Scotiabank’s global operations.
