Your Business Team

As an entrepreneur, you may be have specialized skills in functions like marketing or sales. But there are areas where it makes good sense to draw on the experience of professionals. Here are three professionals who should form part of your business team.

Accountant. If your business is going to do well, the numbers have to add up: profits, margins, cash flow, cost control. A good accountant can help you understand these numbers, provide insight into areas you may have overlooked, and help you anticipate problems. Your accountant can also do your tax return.

Lawyer. A good lawyer can be invaluable for your business, helping you with everything from reviewing contracts to incorporating your business to registering trademarks.

Hiring tip: When looking for lawyers and accountants, check their references, qualifications and areas of specialization (have they worked with small businesses?), and compare fees. To build a strong team, you need to surround yourself with people you are comfortable with and confident in.

Business banker. Your business banker or account manager will work with you to manage your financials needs, both personal and business, taking time to get to understand you and your business goals. They will be able to provide advice and information about the right credit solutions, investments, account options, and cash management resources for your unique situation. The more your account manager knows about you and your business, the better he or she will be able to help you succeed.
