The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon and its accompanying half marathon and 5K, are already considered one of North America's most exciting and rapidly growing events. On, Sunday, September 24th 2006, participants ran or walked the marathon route.
The route begins and ends at the Toronto Convention Centre and runs east and west along Lakeshore Rd (East boundary the Leslie St. spit to Tommy Thompson Park and West boundary Parkside Dr.) Over the years, the event has doubled in size to almost 10,000 participants from 30+ countries, 40+ American states and every province in Canada.
This event also serves as an opportunity for registered charities to sign up and participate as a group in The Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge. This group challenge provides a unique-to-Canada opportunity with a wide range of charities to combine fitness, fun and fundraising.
The funds raised for local charities through this Challenge has grown from $198,000 in 2003 to $412,000 in 2005, to $625,000 raised for 41 charities in 2005, making it a true community event, and Scotiabank's largest, single fundraising effort of the year. The goal for 2006 is to hit the $750,000 mark and perhaps $1million in 2007!
