John Hartman Exhibition

Cities, John Hartman
To commemorate our 175th anniversary, Scotiabank Group commissioned John Hartman's Halifax (2006) as a gift to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Halifax

Scotiabank Group commissioned a major new painting by Canadian artist John Hartman to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS), showing the port of Halifax and a range of narratives and historic events which have moved the city forward in the 175 years since the Bank was incorporated on March 30th, 1832.

To cross the world as Hartman does - to soar over the land to its very horizon - the delerious, beautiful act.
- Noah Richler

In addition to the artwork gift to the AGNS, Scotiabank Group is the presenting sponsor of the "Cities: John Hartman" touring exhibition, which brings together 18 new Hartman works from a variety of public and private collections. As one of Canada's leading contemporary painters, Hartman is known for his large-scale expressionistic landscape paintings animated with the imagery of local historic events and personal narratives.

Scotiabank Group is extending Free Admission to "Cities:John Hartman" to all ScotiaCard holders.

The Book

To complement the art tour and to help chronicle the works of one of Canada's most respected contemporary Canadian artists, Scotiabank Group has also sponsored an accompanying book, "Cities: John Hartman," published by Altitude Press.

The fully-illustrated book features essays by Noah Richler, award-winning author and journalist, Dennis Reid, Chief Curator of the Art Gallery of Ontario, and Stuart Reid.

About John Hartman

John Hartman was born in 1950 in Midland, Ontario and studied Fine Art at McMaster University. In the 1980s with the emergence of Neo-Expressionism, Hartman began to experiment with works that combined figurative, narrative and landscape traditions that would later evolve into the unique painterly expression for which he is acclaimed today.

He received national exposure with the exhibit and catalogue Big North, which toured the country between 1999 and 2002. Hartman works between his studio and home near Lafontaine and his island on Georgian Bay in Ontario, and frequently travels across North America and Europe sketching, photographing, and documenting landscapes, cities and their stories for his paintings.

Fully illustrated book designed by Barr Gilmore, published by Altitude Press with contributions by Noah Richler, the award-winning journalist and author of This is My Country What's Yours?, Dennis Reid, Chief Curator Art Gallery of Ontario and Stuart Reid, Director and Curator of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery.
