What is a Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa card?

The Scotiabank® Prepaid Reloadable Visa is a card that lets you spend only the money you load on it and keep track of your spending. Use it anywhere Visa is accepted – at stores here in Canada, internationally and online. It's convenient, easy and FREE to reload. Plus, earn SCENE points towards FREE movies and more when you choose the SCENE Prepaid Reloadable Visa

Is a Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa card a gift card?

No, the Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa card is not a gift card. A gift card is usually purchased with a set amount, is non-reloadable and is typically given as a gift. Once the balance reaches zero, the card can no longer be used. A Prepaid Reloadable Visa card is an alternative payment card that is purchased by the person who will be using the card and can be reloaded with funds as often as the cardholder wants.

Is this a credit card?

No. Scotiabank’s Prepaid Reloadable Visa card is not a credit card. Instead of using credit, you’re using your own money to make purchases. This means that there is no credit check, application or interest charges.

Are my purchases protected?

Yes. All the purchases you make with your card are protected by Visa’s Zero Liability Protection.

Can I perform a cash withdrawal from funds loaded on the card at an Automated Banking Machine (ATM) or a Branch Teller?

No, your Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa card cannot be used to perform a cash withdrawal at an ATM or via a Branch Representative.

How many Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa cards can I own?

You can own a maximum of four non-expired Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa cards at one time.

Do Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa cards expire?

Yes, the expiry date is printed on the front of the card. If there is a positive balance on your Card within 60 days of expiry, a new personalized replacement Card will be sent to you at your last address on our files. The available balance will be automatically transferred to your new Card, which can be used once activated by you at www.scotiabank.com/myprepaidcard or by calling 1-855-477-1164.

When making online purchases, do I select the Visa option?

When shopping online, depending on the retailer, you will select Visa, or Credit Card. You may be prompted to enter the prepaid card's expiry date, three-digit security code (CVV2 - located on the back of the card), Address Verification (address used to setup the card on file at Scotiabank) and/or Cardholder Name (your name on file with us).

When shopping in a store do I select the Visa option?

When shopping in a store, you need to let retailers know that you are paying with Visa. You will have to swipe your card and sign a Sales Receipt. Some terminals may prompt you to enter the last four digits of your prepaid card number.

How do I earn and redeem SCENE points?

You need two cards to earn and redeem SCENE points - your Scotiabank SCENE Prepaid Reloadable card, and a black SCENE rewards card that you will receive when you register for the program (if you don’t already hold one). Use your Scotiabank SCENE Prepaid Reloadable card to earn points. Earn 1 SCENE point for every $5 spent on everyday purchases. Earn 5x the points at Cineplex Entertainment theatres, online at www.cineplex.com and at participating Sport Chek locations.

How many SCENE points do I earn on purchases made with my SCENE Prepaid Visa card?

You will earn one point for every $1 you spend on your SCENE Prepaid Visa card at Cineplex Entertainment Theatres, online at cineplex.com and at participating Sport Chek locations and one point for every $5 you spend everywhere else.

Can I use my Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa cards to make hotel reservations or car rentals?

In some cases, retailers might not accept prepaid cards. If they do accept the card, some retailers will immediately process the security deposit for the requested car rental or hotel reservation. These funds will be held and unavailable for use until the hold is lifted. As the cardholder, you must have enough funds loaded on the card to cover the cost of the security deposit.

Can I use my Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa at restaurants and other select retailers?

Yes, however, at restaurants and other service retailers, where tips are generally given, such as hotels, taxis/limousines, health and beauty spas, the retailer may pre-authorize your card so that it covers the bill, plus a 15% estimated tip amount.

If the balance on the Card is less than the pre-authorized amount the Card will be declined. If this occurs, you can make a split payment by advising the retailer how much you want to pay from the prepaid card and then use another form of payment for the difference.

Will I be credited if I return or exchange a purchase?

Yes, any credit for returned or exchanged merchandise must come from the retailer and is subject to their return policies. It may take up to 7 to 10 business days before the credit is applied to your card.

Can I make a purchase for an amount greater than the balance on my Prepaid Reloadable Visa card?

No, you must have enough funds loaded on their card to cover the purchase amount. If the balance on the Card is less than the cost of the total purchase, you can make a split payment by advising the retailer how much you want to pay from the prepaid card and then use another form of payment for the difference.

Will the Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa cards have an effect on my credit rating?

No, the Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa card is not a credit card, and will not affect your credit rating.

How many months of card activity can I view on the Scotiabank Prepaid Visa card website?

You may access up to 25 months of activity and access is maintained for 90 days after a card is closed.

What do I do if my prepaid Visa card is lost or stolen?

You must contact Scotiabank Prepaid Customer Service at 1-855-477-1164 or visit a Scotiabank Full-Service branch to report your card lost or stolen. A personalized replacement card will be mailed to you and the existing balance on the card, minus the $10 Replacement Card Fee, will be transferred to your new card.

How can I get a Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa card?

You can visit any Scotiabank Branch to obtain a Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa card. These cards are not available through any other Scotiabank channel at this time.

Can I get supplemental cards for my spouse and /or children?

No, supplemental cards are not available; however, Canadian and U.S. residents, age 14 or older, can get their own card.

Can I get a prepaid card if I’m not a Scotiabank customer?

Yes; you will need to visit a branch and present two pieces of ID (you must meet minimum age of 14 years old).

Can I purchase a prepaid card if I am a non-resident or visitor to Canada?

The card is only available to Canadian or US residents who meet the minimum age of 14 years old.

Loading & Unloading

How can I load and reload my card?

There are three convenient ways to reload.

  1. Transfer funds to your card through Scotia OnLine or Mobile Banking and get instant access to your funds.
  2. Add funds to your card instantly at any Full-Service Scotiabank branch.
  3. Add "Scotiabank Prepaid Visa" as a bill payee and make a bill payment at most Canadian Financial Institutions. Your funds will be available within 5 business days.
How do I perform an instant load or reload from my Scotiabank account via Scotia OnLine or Mobile banking?

Sign into Scotia OnLine or Mobile Banking, select "Scotiabank Prepaid VISA Card(s)" from the Account Summary page, select the "Reload" (Scotia OnLine) or ". . ." (Mobile Banking) button to the right of the card balance. Select a "From" account, enter an amount, and select "Continue" to proceed with the reload.

Can I load or reload a Prepaid Visa card in a Branch?

Yes, once the card is activated, you can instantly load and reload at any Full-Service branch.

Can I set up automatic recurring loads from my accounts to reload my cards?

Yes, you can add your Scotiabank Prepaid Visa card(s) as a bill payee, and set up recurring bill payments to the card(s).

What are minimum and maximum load amounts?

For initial load - minimum $10; maximum $990.

For reloads - minimum $1; maximum $1000 per transaction/per day, and $4000 per 30 days.

What is the maximum balance and/or purchase amount?

The maximum balance and/or purchase amount is $2400.

How can I unload funds and close my card?

You must contact Scotiabank Prepaid Customer Service at 1-855-477-1164 or visit a Scotiabank Full-Service branch to request a card closure and return of funds. There is a card closure fee of $10. The remaining card balance funds are returned to you. The card closure will occur 30 days from the request to allow for clearing of outstanding transactions. If there is a balance on the card, a cheque will be mailed directly to you. Unloaded funds cannot be transferred to a Scotiabank deposit account.

Is there a purchase fee for the Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa card?

Yes, there is a one-time $10.00 purchase fee that will be automatically deducted from the first load after card activation. There is also a $10.00 annual fee which is deducted from the card balance on an annual basis beginning on the first anniversary of the activation date.

Are there additional fees for using Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable Visa cards outside of Canada?

There are no cross border transaction fees for using Scotiabank Prepaid Reloadable cards for purchases outside of Canada. Similar to foreign credit and debit transactions, purchases made in a foreign currency will be deducted from your card in the amount converted to Canadian dollars based on an exchange rate determined by Visa Inc. on our behalf, on the date that the transaction is settled with Visa Inc. The exchange rate includes an additional 2.5% of the converted amount.

When is the $3.50 inactive fee applied?

After 36 consecutive months of inactivity on a card, a $3.50 fee will be charged to the card each month until the balance is reduced to $0.00. The inactivity fee will stop being charged when there is activity on your card.

Is there a fee for calling Prepaid Visa Customer Service Centre (1-855-477-1164)?

Accessing our automated service is free. You can also speak to a Customer Service Agent twice per month for free; you would then be charged $2.00 for each additional Agent assisted call that month.
