The Scotiabank StartRight® Program1 is designed specifically to make settling in Canada easier for newcomers who have been in Canada three years or less. From managing day-to-day banking, building credit history or investing in your future, Scotiabank has a customized financial package exclusively for new Canadians.

Complete an Application Form

You may apply online for a Canadian bank account within 6 months, but not less than 15 business days, prior to the date of your arrival in Canada. Deposits are accepted only after you've arrived in Canada and activated your account. If you'll arrive in Canada within the next 15 business days, please visit any Scotiabank branch to open an account.

What you need when you visit a Scotiabank branch:

  • Landed

    • Valid passport (Passport Number, Country of Issue, Expiry Date)
    • Canadian Embassy letter (confirming approval for immigration) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM5292 or IMM5688)
  • Foreign

    • Valid passport (Passport Number, Country of Issue, Expiry Date)
    • Letter of Introduction provided by Citizenship and Immigration Canada
    • Letter of Employment from your Canadian employer (for credit card applications: must also confirm minimum of $20,000 annual income and minimum employment of one year)
  • International

    • Valid passport (Passport Number, Country of Issue, Expiry Date)
    • Letter of introduction from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (Approval of Student Permit)

Activating Your Account

After you've arrived in Canada, you will have up to 6 months from the date of your application to activate your Scotiabank account in Canada. The account will remain frozen until it is activated.

Once you're in Canada, contact the Scotiabank branch that you selected in your online application. You'll need to schedule an appointment with a Scotiabank advisor, who will help you activate your account. You'll be asked to present two pieces of acceptable identification. International students will need to provide a copy of their Proof of Enrolment from their post secondary institution.

Note: If you haven't visited a Scotiabank branch within 6 months of your application submission date, your account will be closed.
