Complete an Application Form

You may apply online for a Canadian bank account within 6 months, but not less than 15 business days, prior to the date of your arrival in Canada. If you'll arrive in Canada within the next 15 business days, please visit any Scotiabank branch in Canada to open an account.

Once opened, you may transfer up to CAD $50,000 into your Scotiabank account before you arrive in Canada2. This will allow you to request evidence of proof of funds from your new Scotiabank branch before your arrival and allow you safe and easy access to your money once in Canada. When you arrive in Canada, visit your Scotiabank branch to activate your new bank account. Your Scotiabank advisor will be pleased to assist with your financial arrangements to help you start right in Canada.

What you need when you apply for a Scotiabank account online:

  • Permanent

    • Valid passport (Passport Number, Country of Issue, Expiry Date)

    • Canadian Embassy letter (confirming approval for immigration) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM5292 or IMM5688)
  • Foreign

    • Valid passport (Passport Number, Country of Issue, Expiry Date)

    • Letter of Introduction provided by Citizenship and Immigration Canada
  • International

    • Valid passport (Passport Number, Country of Issue, Expiry Date)

    • Letter of introduction from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (Approval of Study Permit) or Temporary Resident VISA (TRV)

Activating Your Account

After you've arrived in Canada, you will have up to 6 months from the date of your application to activate your Scotiabank account. The account will remain on-hold until it is activated.

Contact the Scotiabank branch that you selected in your online application and schedule an appointment with a Scotiabank advisor, who will help you activate your account. You'll be asked to present two pieces of acceptable identification. International students will also need to provide a copy of their Proof of Enrolment from their post secondary institution as well.

Note: If you haven't visited a Scotiabank branch within 6 months of your application submission date, your account will be closed.
