Scotiabank first established local presence in Colombia in 2010 through Scotiabank Colombia S.A.. In 2012, Scotiabank acquired a majority stake of Multibanca Colpatria. Multibanca Colpatria is Colombia's 5th-largest commercial bank with a nationwide network of 171 branches and 314 ATM's.

With the goal of building and maintaining a strong banking presence in the country, a merger of the two banks is taking place, currently in its implementation phase.
