What is a Scotiabank Visa Gift card?

The Scotiabank Visa Gift card is a one-time load stored value payment card and can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. The card provides customers with an opportunity to gift a payment card to anyone they choose. A gift card is usually purchased with a set amount, is non-reloadable and is typically given as a gift. Once the balance reaches zero, the card can no longer be used.

Is this a credit card?

No. Scotiabank’s Visa Gift card is not a credit card. Instead of using credit, you are using the money loaded to the card to make purchases. This means that there is no credit check, application or interest charges.

Are my purchases protected?

Yes. All the purchases you make with your card are protected by Visa’s Zero Liability Protection.

Can I perform a cash withdrawal from funds loaded on the card at an Automated Banking Machine (ATM) or a Branch Teller?

No, your Scotiabank Visa Gift card cannot be used to perform a cash withdrawal at an ATM or via a Branch Representative.

How many Scotiabank Visa Gift Cards can I purchase?

You can purchase a maximum of fifteen Scotiabank Visa Gift Cards in a 365-day period.

Are Scotiabank Visa Gift Cards reloadable?

Scotiabank Visa Gift Cards can only be loaded once, at the time of purchase. Cards cannot be reloaded with additional funds.

Are Scotiabank Visa Gift Cards refundable?

Scotiabank Visa Gift Cards are not refundable.

Do Scotiabank Visa Gift Cards expire?

No, your right to use the funds loaded to the gift card does not expire. There is an expiry date printed on the front of the card for transaction purposes. If your card has reached it’s expiration date and has a positive balance on it, you can call 1-844-484-0048 and a replacement Card will be mailed to you if the card was previously registered. The available balance will be automatically transferred to the new Card, which can be used once the card is activated at or by calling 1-844-484-0048.

When making online purchases, do I select the Visa option?

When shopping online, depending on the retailer, you will select Visa, or Credit Card. You may be prompted to enter the gift card's expiry date, three-digit security code (CVV2 - located on the back of the card), Address Verification (address used to setup the card on file at Scotiabank) and/or Cardholder Name (your name on file with us).

When shopping in a store do I select the Visa option?

When shopping in a store, you need to let retailers know that you are paying with Visa. You will have to swipe your card and sign a Sales Receipt. Some terminals may prompt you to enter the last four digits of your Gift Card number.

Will I be credited if I return or exchange a purchase?

Yes, any credit for returned or exchanged merchandise must come from the retailer and is subject to their return policies. It may take up to 7 to 10 business days before the credit is applied to your card.

Can I make a purchase for an amount greater than the balance on my Scotiabank Visa Gift Card?

No, you must have enough funds loaded on your Card to cover the purchase amount. If the balance on the Card is less than the cost of the total purchase, you can make a split payment by advising the retailer how much you want to pay from the gift card and then use another form of payment for the difference.

What do I do if my Scotiabank Visa Gift card is lost or stolen?

In order to protect your card in the event that it is lost or stolen, it must be registered at If lost or stolen, you must contact Scotiabank Visa Gift Card Customer Service at 1-844-484-0048. A replacement card will be mailed to you and the existing balance on the card, minus the $3.95 Replacement Card Fee, will be transferred to your new card.

How can I get a Scotiabank Visa Gift card?

You can visit any Scotiabank Full-Service Branch to obtain a Scotiabank Visa Gift Card. These cards are not available through any other Scotiabank channel at this time.

Can I get a Scotiabank Visa Gift Card if I’m not a Scotiabank customer?

You need to be a Scotiabank customer to purchase a Visa Gift Card.

Can I purchase a Visa Gift Card if I am a non-resident or visitor to Canada?

The card is only available to Canadian or US residents who meet the minimum age of 14 years old.


Is there a purchase fee for the Scotiabank Visa Gift card?

Yes, there is a one-time $3.95 purchase fee irrespective of load amount (minimum load: $10, maximum load: $500)

Are there additional fees for using Scotiabank Visa Gift cards outside of Canada?

There are no transaction fees for using Scotiabank Visa Gift cards for purchases outside of Canada. Similar to foreign credit and debit transactions, purchases made in a foreign currency will be deducted from your card in the amount converted to Canadian dollars based on an exchange rate determined by Visa Inc. on our behalf, on the date that the transaction is settled with Visa Inc. The exchange rate includes an additional 2.5% of the converted amount.

Is there a fee for calling Visa Gift Card Customer Service Centre (1-844-484-0048)?

Accessing our automated service is free. You can also speak to a Customer Service Agent twice per month for free; you would then be charged $2.00 for each additional Agent assisted call that month.
