Bringing Joy to children during the Holidays

Scotiabank Barbados prides itself on being relevant and responsive with the Barbadian community. So when the local chapter of Prison Fellowship International (PFI) launched its 2007 Angel Tree programme, they were ready and willing to assist.

In December 2007, as in the previous six years, Scotiabankers, their customers, families as well as friends and neighbours of the bank rallied to the cause. The cause? To provide the children of prison inmates with gifts for Christmas.

According to Bright Future Champion Marcelle Greenidge, the venture is quite a unique one: The Angel Tree programme is one of the few in which our corporate giving has been so warmly embraced by Scotiabankers and customers and others outside the bank.

This area of the Bright Future programme simultaneously allows Scotiabankers to contribute their time and energies, while customers demonstrate their interest in our activities while cementing their relationships with us. Above all, every child that we can collectively help to feel wanted and loved is a special investment for the future well-being of the Barbadian society. Its really not at all unusual to find staff members helping customers to shop for gifts during this time, she added.

Since 2001, Scotiabank has provided several thousands of gifts for children in homes across the island. PFI Barbados Director, Thomas Watts and patron Win Callender graciously accepted the gifts on behalf of the children.

Each December, Christmas trees across all eight branches are decorated with paper angels. Staff and customers select angels  each representing a child identifiable only by gender and age  and buy and return a wrapped gift to their favourite Scotabanker or most convenient Scotiabank location.
