Finding Ways To Fight Back
Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to guarding at-risk youth against HIV/AIDS. Scotiabank remains determined to help reduce the spread of this preventable virus and end discrimination against HIV/AIDS positive persons.
In September 2007, together with the Barbados Ministry of Education and The Division of Youth Affairs, Scotiabank launched iNFo’ Life, a comprehensive HIV/AIDS education programme geared to secondary students and young adults.
Piloted last March at The Lodge School, the programme delivers its message through meaningful dramatic and dance presentations and face-to-face dialogue with people living with HIV/AIDS. Key facts about HIV/AIDS, including the A&B (Abstain and Be Faithful) message of HIV/AIDS safety, are provided to students through the programme’s facilitators, brochures, bookmarks, and posters in the schools. Importantly, there is also emphasis on helping students understand the nature of discrimination, and how not to practice it.
Response from students and teachers to the iNFo’ Life program has been so positive that it will expand into secondary schools across Barbados in the coming year. Since September, the iNFO’ Life programme has been launched in The Garrison, Princess Margaret, Springer Memorial, Ellerslie and St. James Secondary Schools, with other launches scheduled in the coming school terms.
iNFo’ Life is Scotiabank’s latest offensive move in the fight against HIV/AIDS. At all levels of the bank, we are strongly committed to continuing that fight until it is won.”
